According to Revenue Department. The area
under forest is 77,400 hect.and almost ninety nine percent of it is found in
Naugarh C.D. block of Chakia tahsil. There the forests are dense and mainly
of the tropical dry mixed deciduous type having varying growth depending
upon the nature of soil and moisture. There are forests on ridges of flat
hill tops and foot hills but trees found in this region are generally of
poor quality.
Salai,Piar, Mahuwa, Tendu trees apart from
usual trees are mainly found in the district. Dry green vegetation can be
seen on the plateau region while Buswellia type of jungle is found on the
flat tops of the hill. Dhak jungal are also found in the plain area of the
district .the Chakia tahsil is the least cultivated because the hilly terain
are under forests.
Except in the forest area of Chakia tahsil
large carnivore like tiger and leopard are in the district but jackals and
foxes are found near the habitation. On the bank of Ganga river wild pigs
and blue bulls (Nilgai) are generally seen. In whole of the Naugarh forest
leopard is found but tigers are found occasionally. Sambhar and Chital which
were earlier found in abundance in Londa (a place 2 km away from Chakia) are
now gradually vanishing. A sanctuary in beautiful forest has been
established in year 1957 accommodating wild birds and animals. Only common
type of birds and reptiles are found in the region with the exception of
python which is found on the rocky slopes of low hills.
